Extraordinary waters, unforgettable days

Patagonia Baker Lodge sits in the heart of one of the most diverse and productive fishing regions in Chilean Patagonia, home to some of the largest brown and rainbow trout in the country. Options range from float trips on the mighty Baker River, to wading spring-creek-style waters, to fishing both small and large lakes—offering some of the best sight-fishing opportunities in Patagonia. Most fisheries are only minutes from the lodge, allowing you to maximize your time on the water. Target species include brown and rainbow trout, green perch, and cherry salmon, with the possibility of pursuing enormous king salmon in remote rivers.

Float and wade

The Baker River

The Baker is vast, flowing out of General Carrera Lake as a turquoise-blue, gin-clear river averaging 35,000 cfs. Despite its size, it’s remarkably fishable—and one of the finest dry-fly and sight-fishing rivers in the world. From the lodge deck, it’s common to see rainbow trout well over 20". The river’s rocky edges and seam lines are alive with feeding fish, while back eddies can hold dozens of rising rainbows.

We offer walk-and-wade as well as jet-boat floats to put you on the best water. Browns over 24" are always in play on large terrestrials and streamers, while consistent rainbow activity means you can fish at a relaxed pace or stay out all day.

Sight fishing

The Cochrane River

Flowing from nearby Cochrane Lake, this medium-sized river looks like a giant spring creek—gin-clear water, heavy weed beds, and deep undercut banks. It’s here that you’ll find massive brown and rainbow trout from 4 to 8+ pounds, fueled by prolific hatches of caddis, mayflies, terrestrials, and forage fish. With its green-tinted clarity and rich structure, the Cochrane rivals New Zealand’s best trout rivers for sight-fishing. Walk-and-wade days typically cover just 1–2 km, with endless opportunities to target trout feeding on or near the surface.

Dry-fly action

Lakes and Lagoons

The lodge’s lakes are a must for North American anglers. Clear water lakes with rocky shoals provide world-class sight fishing, while tannic lakes come alive with dragonfly and damselfly hatches that trigger explosive surface takes. Expect leaping eats and visual dry-fly action that rivals New Zealand. Reed lines, weed beds, overhanging brush, and timbered shorelines create endless shallow water habitat for cruising and rising trout.

Migratory trout

The Small Streams and Jeinimeni River

While Patagonia Baker Lodge is surrounded by some of the region’s largest lakes, including General Carrera Lake and Cochrane Lake, these waters are also home to some truly gigantic brown and rainbow trout.

Throughout the season, trout migrate from the lakes into small- and medium-sized mountain streams, providing exceptional opportunities to target large fish in intimate and spectacular surroundings.

Rainbow trout can be found in the rivers during our spring season, from October through mid-December, while migratory brown trout begin entering the rivers in late February and continue through May.

We have landed trout measuring up to 40 inches, primarily on streamers.

Some of these rivers are located less than an hour from the lodge, while others are farther afield. A select few are so remote that they can only be accessed by helicopter.

Exploradores valley

King Salmon

Introduced to Chile in the late 1960s, King Salmon have established wild populations in select rivers of central and southern Patagonia, creating a unique and highly rewarding angling opportunity.

While their numbers are not as abundant as those found in Alaska, from November through March anglers have the chance to pursue these powerful fish within the spectacular river and lake system of the Exploradores River Valley. Hooking a King Salmon here is never guaranteed—which is precisely what makes the experience so special. For those willing to embrace the challenge, the rewards can be extraordinary, and several of our guests have landed truly impressive fish.

This remarkable excursion can also be combined with fishing for resident brown trout, with fish reaching up to 20 inches, adding even more diversity to the experience.

Although the drive from the lodge takes just over two hours, it is more than worth the journey. The adventure, the untouched wilderness, and the breathtaking scenery make this one of the most memorable fishing experiences in Patagonia.
